there are many places that students and former students have still not seen.<\/p>\n<p>But since virtually everyone goes through the main gate, the Bush Canteen is unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2104\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0011-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0011-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0011.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is a stone&#8217;s throw right of the main gate, seated southeast of the campus and showing the shameful retrogression in the entire nation&#8217;s pursuit of truth and integrity; our compromise with mediocrity; our spineless approach to solving existential problems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2105\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0033-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0033-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0033.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2018You mean students eat there?,\u2019 a friend asked when I showed him the pictures.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2106\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2106\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2106 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0010-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0010-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0010.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Food vendors cook here!!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018I remember when students demanded an upgrade of the place in the mid 1990s they were told clearly that it was not recognised by the university,\u2019 I tried in vain to defend my alma mater.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2107\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0027-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0027-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0027.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But some 20 years down the line, academic rigour and intellectual analysis required to solve the nation&#8217;s existential problems has yielded to populist derriere kissing.<\/p>\n<p>It plays out in many forms; we need the support of the SRC; the Junior Common Room (JCR) canteens are no longer operating; so where can poor students find cheap food to buy?.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2108\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2108 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0018-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0018-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0018.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A man stepping from a barbering shop onto the eating area&#8230;hair on the floor all the time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The university janitors eat there so you cannot stop students from going there; some workers&#8217; family members are sellers in that market so you need a human face to solving the problem; bla bla blab&#8230;&#8230;excuses ad nauseum.<\/p>\n<p>I once had lunch at a so called five-star hotel here in Accra.<\/p>\n<p>We joined a long queue to the buffet table with waiters standing behind the food.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2109\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2109 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0022-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0022-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0022.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Banku wrapped hot in plastic bags to shape it!!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And there was banku (a ball of corn dough) wrapped in transparent plastic bags.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone sees it as normal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2117\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2117\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2117 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181126-WA0014-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181126-WA0014-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181126-WA0014.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hot soup served in plastic bags.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It seems to me that as part of their orientation, expatriates are told not to comment on our culture or anything horrible they find here.<\/p>\n<p>So they were all in the queue.<\/p>\n<p>Aarrgh!!! Are you not tired of this country?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2111\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0009-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0009-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0009.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If Legon is the nation\u2019s premiere university \u2013 a brand that students and former students brandish with a grin and pride, and this is our standard, then\u2026..<\/p>\n<p>As we are all aware, difficulty in gaining admission is also a brand and now difficulty in entering or navigating the campus with your car is also the norm<br \/>\nAnd then what do you see?<\/p>\n<p>Pockets of improvised, dirty market stalls where hot soup is served in plastic bags to students and the wider community, then\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>When I was young, my class two teacher told me that when you are eating and a housefly lands on the food, scoop that portion and throw it away.<\/p>\n<p>From class two to date, I have always preached that message to anyone who cares to listen.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Then before long you will throw all your food away,\u2019 a childhood friend said way back then.<\/p>\n<p>Today, cholera is still with us, contrary to what Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the mayor of Accra is preaching that there has been no cholera in Accra in the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>He can disregard the facts all he wants; we are not amused.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2110\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2110\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2110 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0014-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0014-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG-20181124-WA0014.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wigs done&#8230;naked fire is used to clear excess strands of artificial hair on a lady&#8217;s head!!!
