QUOTATIONS #2."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE 23RD GJA AWARDS; QUOTATIONS #2.<\/p>\n<p>By Isaac Ato MENSAH<br \/>\nAccra- 2 November, 2018.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1855\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/download-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"76\" height=\"116\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 23rd Ghana Journalists Awards held last weekend in Accra has lost its key message.<\/p>\n<p>The thrust has been submerged by the celebrations of the award winners.<\/p>\n<p>So let us quickly recap.<\/p>\n<p>The theme chosen was, \u2018State of Investigative Journalism: Boundaries of Privacy and Borders of the Public Interest\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akufo, the chief justice (CJ), who was the keynote speaker, delivered a forthright message on the theme.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1880\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images-50.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images-50.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images-50-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2018You cannot break into somebody\u2019s house and install cameras claiming you are conducting an investigation in the interest of the public.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1882\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ghanaweb.com reported the CJ as saying further that considering the fluid nature of the subject [investigative journalism], journalists must be guided by their professional code of ethics and they must know where their rights end and where another person&#8217;s rights begin.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The outcome of an investigative report should not be judgemental and journalists should not take positions as is sometimes done in their reports.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It is important to clarify this point; the CJ is talking about news reports, not editorials\/opinions.<\/p>\n<p>Do not conjure, simulate or invent news; let news happen and then report it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1881\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images-51.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images-51.jpg 224w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/images-51-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the words of Professor Kwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh from the title of his inaugural lecture at University of Ghana, Legon, <em>Ka<\/em> <em>Nea<\/em> <em>W&#8217;ahu<\/em>&#8211; <em>Report<\/em> <em>What<\/em> <em>You<\/em> <em>Have<\/em> <em>Seen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The CJ gave a solution; the GJA Code of Ethics should be reviewed periodically to ensure that it is in sync with the changing trends.<\/p>\n<p>The GJA Code of Ethics first came into use in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>It was reviewed and launched last year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1883\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/download-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/download-12.jpg 275w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/download-12-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the launch, Roland Affail Monney, the GJA president, said that the new document had taken into consideration possible ethical breaches.<\/p>\n<p>What do the relevant portions say about investigative journalism?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1884\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/gja-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2018A journalist:<br \/>\n&#8211; at all times upholds and defends the principles of media freedom and independence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; reports the truth at all times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; upholds the public interest and the right of the public to be informed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; does not suppress news, information and materials on the basis of threats, inducements, and individual preferences or for personal gain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; obtains information, videos, ideas, data, photographs and illustrations only by honest, straightforward, fair and open means- unless otherwise tampered by public interest considerations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Does not intrude on anybody\u2019s private life, grief or distress unless justified by overriding consideration of public interest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ensures that photographs and multimedia contents adequately reflect an event and do not highlight an event out of context.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>These eight provisions out of 24 should guide all of us playing various roles in the media.<\/p>\n<p>It is but important that lay people also know these ethical guidelines by which all journalists, especially investigative journalists should conduct their affairs.<\/p>\n<p>We are happy and willing to publicise this code of ethics.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to know that at the formal launch of the Code, Roland Affail Monney, the GJA president remarked, \u2018&#8230;devoid of any campaign drive, the new code is one of the legacies bequeathed to the media fraternity\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Now you have it.<\/p>\n<p>And you know all the trending issues on investigative journalism in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1885\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/download-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"279\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But do not rush to give a verdict yet, for at the GJA Awards ceremony, the CJ said that all pronouncements of guilt or otherwise are the prerogative of a court of competent jurisdiction in line with the rule of law and the unerring principles of natural justice.<\/p>\n<p>Now what do you say?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Feedback;
