Some stories were started well but did not lead anywhere so they were not useful to the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Now that is an interesting point to note because many persons here in Ghana do not like lengthy articles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1861\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/download-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/download-9.jpg 275w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/download-9-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She added that the Committee was lenient in the selection process given that more than half of the applicants did not follow laid down procedure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The submission of entries was marred unprofessionalism, especially [by] those that submitted broadcast works&#8230;.If we were very strict, the list of winners would have been very minimal,&#8217; said Dartey.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;And when I talk&#8230;..&#8217;, my mentor will add.<\/p>\n<p>Dartey went on&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1862\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1806776773650_9431431851246-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1806776773650_9431431851246-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1806776773650_9431431851246-2-425x283.jpg 425w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1806776773650_9431431851246-2-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1806776773650_9431431851246-2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There is a recycling of award winners. The same old persons are always winning. Meanwhile there are hundreds of radio stations and tens of newspapers in the country. We encourage more journalists to participate next time to make the awards much more competitive.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In his book, <em>Fighting<\/em> <em>for<\/em> <em>Freedom<\/em>: <em>Autobiography<\/em> <em>of<\/em> <em>an<\/em> <em>African<\/em> <em>Journalist<\/em>, Kabral Blay-Amihere, who was director of the Ghana Institute of Journalism at age 28, tells of his short spell in Europe with a newspaper\/magazine back in his hey days.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1863\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images-47-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images-47-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images-47.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Let the story breathe&#8217;, his mentor retorted, when he, Blay-Amihere the champion of the Ghanaian media landscape at the time had submitted a story to his mentor\/preceptor for publication.<\/p>\n<p>Kabral Blay-Amihere who has since served as Ghana&#8217;s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone and La Cote D&#8217;Ivoire published his book in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1864\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/XGltYWdlc1xjb250ZW50XDEwMjgyMDE4NDA2MjFfOGR0MndqaXZ1cF84NjA2NDQzODk3MjAwXzIzMjQyOTIxOTUwMjkuanBnfDUwMHwzMDB8MTAvMjkvMjAxOA-1-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/XGltYWdlc1xjb250ZW50XDEwMjgyMDE4NDA2MjFfOGR0MndqaXZ1cF84NjA2NDQzODk3MjAwXzIzMjQyOTIxOTUwMjkuanBnfDUwMHwzMDB8MTAvMjkvMjAxOA-1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/XGltYWdlc1xjb250ZW50XDEwMjgyMDE4NDA2MjFfOGR0MndqaXZ1cF84NjA2NDQzODk3MjAwXzIzMjQyOTIxOTUwMjkuanBnfDUwMHwzMDB8MTAvMjkvMjAxOA-1-425x255.jpg 425w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/XGltYWdlc1xjb250ZW50XDEwMjgyMDE4NDA2MjFfOGR0MndqaXZ1cF84NjA2NDQzODk3MjAwXzIzMjQyOTIxOTUwMjkuanBnfDUwMHwzMDB8MTAvMjkvMjAxOA-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He who became GJA president at least twice tells us that back then he was told by some &#8220;small&#8221; magazine editor in Europe that his story was dead; could not breathe; had no life in it. And he was graciously and freely taught how to not write &#8216;an essay&#8217; and present it as a news story.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1868\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1348759291900_580651310634-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1348759291900_580651310634-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1348759291900_580651310634-425x283.jpg 425w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1348759291900_580651310634-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1348759291900_580651310634.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost forty years after Ambassador Blay-Amihere&#8217;s experience , we have a similar verdict from the GJA Awards Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Uhmmm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The brain drain is here, right here&#8217;, was the first line I heard from my mentor.<\/p>\n<p>Over twenty years ago, my mentor said that if you stay in &#8220;ghana&#8221; and continue to glorify <em>Banku<\/em>\u00a0(wrapped in plastic foils) with tilapia, then the influence you will have on the society is exactly what we see all around us; a nation in decline on many fronts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1867\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images-42.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images-42.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images-42-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Croteau and Hoynes have told us the effect of the media on the society.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps, the response by the government of Ghana <em>might<\/em> help.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1865\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/images-43.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For, at the 23rd GJA Awards Ceremony, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, deputy information minister and for many years a radio show host of Joy 99.7FM Accra stated that the government will from next year strengthen the capacities of media personnel in production, analytics, editorial and specialisation.<\/p>\n<p>Yet another promise! Strengthen the capacities indeed.
