{"id":1403,"date":"2018-09-24T16:04:36","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T16:04:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.writersghana.com\/?p=1403"},"modified":"2018-09-24T16:09:02","modified_gmt":"2018-09-24T16:09:02","slug":"kwame-nkrumah-on-journalism-and-communication-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/24\/kwame-nkrumah-on-journalism-and-communication-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly\/","title":{"rendered":"KWAME NKRUMAH ON JOURNALISM AND COMMUNICATION: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Isaac Ato MENSAH<\/p>\n<p>Accra- 24 September, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1405\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">September 21 is now celebrated in Ghana and throughout Africa as Africa Day of Peace in honour of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana\u2019s first president.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">And yes, Nkrumah was an active practising journalist!<\/p>\n<p>Critics of Kwame Nkrumah have perhaps not realized that Prof Ali Mazrui has settled the debate about Nkrumah to their consolation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking in Accra in 2002 on the topic\u00a0<em>Nkrumah&#8217;s Legacy And Africa&#8217;s Triple Heritage Between Globalization And Counter Terrorism<\/em>, the respected African Scholar said, \u2018Nkrumah was a great African but a small Ghanaian\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mazrui was fully aware of the Preventive Detention Act (PDA) and the declaration of Ghana as a one party state and the referendum that made for a de facto legal dictatorship in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1412\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk8-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk8-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk8.jpg 341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018No single measure did more to bring down Nkrumah\u2019s reputation than his adoption of internment without trial for the preservation of security\u2019, David Birmingham stated about the PDA in Nkrumah&#8217;s biography.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 1957, Nkrumah passed the Avoidance of Discrimination Act in response to bus strikes led by the Ga people of Accra arising out of discrimination in appointments to government offices&#8230;..D\u00e9j\u00e0 vu?<\/p>\n<p>What would Nkrumah have done for the Ga people of the nation\u2019s capital and all of us who have silently and loudly whispered or complained or written or condemned the abusive and deliberate promotion of the Twi language to dominate other ethnic groups&#8217; languages on our airwaves?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1407\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-20-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-20-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-20-425x274.jpg 425w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-20.jpg 474w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo&#8230;Kwesi Gyan-Apenteng. A statement signed by George Sarpong, Executive Secretary for National Media Commission said Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng is a Consultant in Communication, Media and Culture&#8230; Founder and editor African Topics magazine, the only Pan-African publication dedicated to governance and human rights&#8230; Gyan-Apenteng worked with Third World Network, Cultural Initiatives Support Programme, European Union Culture Fund for Ghana&#8230;..which means???<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What would Nkrumah have said to the National Communications Authority and the National Media Commission whose heads and board of directors he had a greater say in appointing?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Would Nkrumah have made a statement on the occasion of the UN declaration of 2019 as a year of Indigenous Languages?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">O yes we can bet on that since he actively promoted the Bureau of Ghana Languages and the National Commission on Culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The whole world knew where Nkrumah stood on issues, even if he got it wrong; he did not obfuscate. And he did get some things wrong; he was not perfect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He also actively promoted the media by establishing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in 1957.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1408\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-21.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-21-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">At its best, the GNA had offices in Lagos, Nairobi, London and New York. Imagine the GNA, as the Reuters equivalent of today!<\/p>\n<p>At its best, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation operated Radio One (GBC1) which could be heard in Lagos, Nigeria!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all gone! Meeehn!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;It is part of our revolutionary credo that within the competitive system of capitalism, the press cannot function in accordance with a strict regard for the sacredness of facts, and that the press, therefore, should not remain in private hands,&#8221; declared Nkrumah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">To this end he implemented pre-publication censorship of all news from 1960.<\/p>\n<p>That was bad, wasn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He purchased the Daily Graphic from its owners, The Mirror Group of the UK, thus making it completely state owned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 1963, as a response to \u2018insolence and laziness of boys and girls\u2019,Nkrumah announced on TV among other things \u2018the introduction of the National Pledge and the beginning of a National Flag salute in schools and the spirit of service among Ghanaian youth\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today, someone will definitely go to court to say they have the right not to salute the national flag&#8230;.perhaps from a religious group.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The constitutional right of freedom of expression includes the right not to express yourself the way the majority want it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1409\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-15.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-15.png 225w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-15-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Ghana&#8217;s television will not cater for cheap entertainment or commercialism; its paramount objective will be education in its broadest and purest sense\u2019, said president Nkrumah to parliament on 15 October 1963.<\/p>\n<p>Excellent. Bring back Nkrumah now now now! Action- one time!<\/p>\n<p>\u2018To the true African journalist, his newspaper is a collective organiser, a collective instrument of mobilisation and a collective educator- a weapon, first and foremost, to overthrow colonisation and imperialism and to assist total African independence and unity\u2019, said president Nkrumah to the Second Conference of African Journalists in Accra on 11 November, 1963.<\/p>\n<p>True that!<\/p>\n<p>Nkrumah established the Accra Evening News, together with others, as his private media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In fact the distance from the Flagstaff House to the Ghana Film Corporation (now TV3) and Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (established 1953) is just about 100 meters and he had a propaganda secretary &#8211; Hannah Cudjoe, at one time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0He was in absolute charge of the media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was interesting that he admitted to not knowing his birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he chose 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0September as a message to the world.<\/p>\n<p>That date is the equinox; a day to reflect on our 12 hours of day light and 12 hours of darkness. It affords us an opportunity to reflect on our common humanity and dignity irrespective of our race, colour or creed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He had been born Francis Nwia Kofi Ngoloma, he changed his name to Kwame Nkrumah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was encouraged by the Catholic priest George Fischer in Axim to start his formal education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Young Nkrumah caught the attention of\u00a0 Alec Gordon Fraser, then principal of Government Training College (later Achimota School) who brought him to Accra for teacher training.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1410\" src=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-23-300x144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-23-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/writersghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/nk-23.jpg 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There he heard Nnamdi Azikiwe, a journalist (later to become Nigerian president) speak and that greatly influenced him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Achimota, Nkrumah was influenced by Dr Kwegyir Aggrey, brilliant scholar and teacher who exposed him to the ideas of Marcus Garvey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thus from Achimota, Nkrumah gained interest in teaching and rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He taught in primary schools in Elmina and Axim and the Catholic junior seminary secondary school in Emissano. Here, perhaps his interest in theology was born.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He considered becoming a Jesuit priest when teaching at St Teresa\u2019s Catholic Seminary in Emissano back in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Years later, when he had completed his Bachelor\u2019s degree in Theology in Pennsylvania, he was often invited to preach at Presbyterian churches in Philadelphia and New York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having obtained a Master of Arts in Philosophy and a Master of Science in Education in Pennsylvania and having debated street orators in Harlem, New York, Nkrumah with his Gold Coast training and the Presbyterian preaching engagements, was now well versed in logic, rhetoric, theology, education and journalism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was prepared to take on the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I liked him and enjoyed talking to him, but he did not seem to me to have an analytical mind. He wanted answers too quickly. I think part of the trouble may have been that he wasn\u2019t concentrating very hard on his thesis.
