We have written so much on the Ghana Banking Scandal (Part 1-5).<\/p>\n

One of our regular readers (let us call her Sheila) has insisted that she wants a \u2018purely ethical exposition\u2019.<\/p>\n

So let\u2019s roll\u2026.<\/p>\n

Ethics is about making the right choices for ourselves and the society in which we live.<\/p>\n

These choices are revealed in our speech and acts of omission and commission.<\/p>\n

\u2018No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth,\u2019 says Plato.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2018And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free,\u2019 says the teacher from Galilee (John 8:32).<\/p>\n

The ancient Egyptians believed that within our hearts reside our minds (thoughts and intellect) and our emotions.<\/p>\n

The heart therefore had to be weighed against a feather and prove lighter than the latter before the soul could pass on peacefully into eternal rest.<\/p>\n

And we have been warned in two holy books that, ‘Without a pure heart, no one can see God’ (1 Peter 1:15-25; Matt 5:8; and the Holy Qu\u2019ran in Surah 8:24).<\/p>\n

In any progressive and well governed society there is an urgent need for a leadership of sound core values and accountable management.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Time saving Truth from Falsehood….Falsehood needs clothing to cover shame; Truth doesn’t.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Chris Jones, writing in The Conversation<\/em>\u00a0of April 25, 2017 states that \u2018Trust is essential to caring and social cohesion\u2019\u00a0 and this is required for \u2018moral leadership\u2019….make that ethical leadership.<\/p>\n

Jones further describes categorical ethical qualities that appear to have been lacking in our national banking regulators and leadership,<\/p>\n

\u2018Knowledge and expertise to understand one\u2019s world, place and role in it is extremely important.<\/p>\n

It is to know the importance of speaking truth and acting with integrity.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t withhold, but discloses.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t mock, but respects.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t intimidate, but inspires.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t manipulate, but motivates.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t bully, but protects\u2019.<\/p>\n

He also prescribes leaders \u2018who have the ability to honestly deal with their own weaknesses\u2019.<\/p>\n

It was Paul Lawrence of Harvard Business School who gave a four-factor criteria for ethical leadership; prosperity, peace\/trust, knowledge and justice.<\/p>\n

Lawrence argued that these are innate drives characteristic of all humans.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2018Leaders honestly ask what other people are entitled to, and then promote it at all cost,\u2019 Chris Jones declares. Ethical leadership ‘doesn\u2019t put a veil over injustice.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018This asks tremendous courage, because one is often on one\u2019s own, threatened, bullied and even reviled,\u2019 he further pointed out.<\/p>\n

The Islamic perspective to this last point is interesting and relevant.<\/p>\n

It is that, \u2018individual autonomy (ijtih\u0101d<\/em>) can do much to oppose and even eradicate authoritarianism and patriarchy\u2019, state Nuran Davis and Yusef Waghid in The Conversation<\/em> of August 17, 2016.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Are you ready for a lone battle\u2026….and suffer death on the cross?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To the Amen corner- those who do not want to rock the boat or be called “DIFFICULT” or “TOO KNOWN”, Dr Stuart Palmer, Head of Ethics Research at Australian Ethical Investment admonishes us to stop making tribes of our opinions.<\/p>\n

\u2018We need to have conversations with people who know things we don\u2019t, and with people we disagree with,\u2019 Palmer is quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

In short beware of sycophants, bootlickers and the loafers after a harmonious mediocrity.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

La V\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/em> “Truth” by Jules Joseph Lefebvre. The naked Truth does not feel ashamed…but shines a light upon herself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mark Pastin writing in the Huffpost of June 20, 2016 highlights available research data organizations can use to improve their ethics.<\/p>\n

He states, \u2018The first factor is a work culture in which employees are never retaliated against for reporting concerns. Many studies show that organizations in which employees report errors do better on quality measures\u2026\u2026..Employees in all organizations fear retaliation to some extent, especially when reporting on their managers. This fear of speaking up allowed unethical practices to persist at GM and Volkswagen even when many employees knew better.\u2019<\/p>\n

Now doesn\u2019t that remind us all of The Emperor\u2019s New Clothes<\/em>?<\/p>\n

One of my mentors has always declared emphatically, \u2018The crowning glory of a man\u2019s life is to do the will of God; it is not eternal life\u2019.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Time\u2026..saving the innocent….<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So, to Sheila and co, and all those involved in the Ghana banking scandal, and all of us, this is a good and true ethical guide.<\/p>\n

At all times, simply try to do the will of God, that’s all.<\/p>\n

How do you know the will of God? He is<\/em> in your heart.<\/p>\n

If you still can\u2019t feel<\/em> him, then just \u2018listen to the still small voice of the spirit within you\u2019, suggests another mentor and former employer.<\/p>\n

And leave the rest for Him.<\/p>\n

Or Her?<\/p>\n

And remember\u2026.<\/p>\n

Even if you escape so called punishment, there shall be divine retribution.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t believe in divine retribution, then \u2018you\u2019re a foolish atheist or an irreligious libertine\u2019.<\/p>\n
